FAKENHAM TOURIST INFORMATION POINT
2011 SEASON REPORT
CONCLUSION
The Tourist Information Point has established a base at the Library and has learned to work with the building and the staff to best advantage. The increased visitor numbers has shown that callers are able to find the information that they need from the resources which are on offer and it should be our aim to build on this experience for future seasons.

Please note - The Tourist Information is now closed for the season. The telephone number is due to change - please return to the website early next year for any updates.
Fakenham Tourist Information Point opened on Monday 18th April for the 2011 season and closed on Friday 30th September. The desk which is located in the library, was staffed from Monday to Saturday. The afternoon sessions were supported by a team of volunteers who enabled information to be distributed to a wider audience.
AIMS
To promote Fakenham and the surrounding area as a tourist destination.
To support the local economy by promoting local shops and services.
To highlight and draw attention to local attractions and events.
FUNDING
To run the Tourist Information Point for the season, funds were drawn down from North Norfolk Community Partnership and a grant of £850.00 was applied for from Fakenham Town Council. The stands and carousels purchased in previous years proved sufficient for the stock of leaflets for the season.
Subscribers for the local accommodation brochure raised £150.00 and a small sum was received from the sale of local publications.
The remainder of the Chamber of Trade maps were distributed throughout the season.
A guide to local cafes, restaurants and pubs was produced by North Norfolk District Council, containing information given by Tourist Information Point staff. Local walks guides proved extremely popular, which were the result of a joint initiative between Norfolk County Council and Coast Alive, and following meetings with Fakenham Area Partnership.
INITIATIVES
To promote a new mobile phone number with good reception for the local area.
To promote the Tourist Information Point with local businesses by means of leaflets.
To become established as a booking agent for the Cromer Pier theatre.
STAFFING
A huge vote of thanks to all the staff and volunteers for their enthusiasm, patience and sense of humour, this season. We have been lucky to secure the amount of volunteer hours to cover the majority of afternoon sessions this season, we were able to retain some’ old hands’. Recruitment of new volunteers was facilitated by publicity in the Fakenham Sun and the Beacon. Thanks also go to our hosts, the Fakenham Library staff, who deal with tourism enquiries when the Tourist Information Point is closed.
OVERVIEW OF THE SEASON
Visitor numbers rose by 595 compared to last season, the total number of callers during manned hours was 3187. This increase shows the strength and durability of Fakenham as a tourist destination in a time of economic constraint. Phone calls dwindled to almost nothing, probably because of the change of number and problems with mobile phone signal. Also the internet is now the first port of call for many people planning a visit to the area, the accommodation brochure information is also advertised on the website, but 300 copies were collected by callers to the Tourist Information Point.
The present site of the displays in the lobby of the Library continued to prove popular, and acts as good publicity tool, outweighing the problem of the distance from the desk. A huge demand for bus timetables with visitors and local residents often meant that stocks frequently ran out and bus companies had to be contacted for new supplies. Mid season changes to timetables in some bus companies led to confusion amongst the public and advice from TIP staff was always gratefully received. The strength of Fakenham, with its’ markets and surrounding attractions continues to fill all types of holiday accommodation throughout the season as well as bringing visitors for the day.
